Jonas Birgén pushing towards goal

Match Report Rd 2

The focus before Saturday’s top of the table clash was on building team spirit, and wow did the Swans come out firing! It took Bromma some time to find an answer to the onslaught of passion and goals as the Swans came out dominating. With the return of club legend Hammar it was a special day for Årsta along with 4 debut players, it seemed that we were unstoppable, but Bromma slowly found the answers to calm the storm and went into the first break with Årsta just a couple of goals in the lead.

A tough second quarter saw scores fairly close at half time Bromma going into the third with a small advantage. The third and arguably one of the most heated quarters seen in Saff footy in a couple of years saw the vikings linking well and showing that they are a threat this year, but to Årsta’s credit they pulled back the vikings domination and kicked 3 quick goals in succession towards the end of the break.

The final term was just too much for Swans to hold on to and Bromma with an absolute onslaught of missed goals not seen since the 2009 grand final, mostly due to the unrelenting pressure of the boys in Red and White saw the Vikings kick 12-21-93 to the Swans very accurate 11-4-70.

Pete L kicking 2 goals in his debut match and Oskar booting one, Tommi and Jon both with solid performances made the coaches player a tough one to decide, especially after Jonas showed some amazing talent to get his second goal of the season, and probably the best so far this year if not the best I have seen in Stockholm footy. The legend himself The Mighty Hammar after a slow start in the first half found some form and composure to go on and show he can play both forward and back grabbed the coach’s attention and went on to win the award.

Good match yesterday (Sat, 7th May 2011), both teams playing with plenty of skill & heart. Årsta had 4 players on debut, all of whom shined! Bromma had a little more run at the end of the match & ran away winners in the last quarter, although Årsta pushed them all the way. Congratulations to all for a good day out.

Umpiring Duties

We have umpiring duties for the round 2 match on Friday night 6th May. The game starts at 1830, so goal umpires should be there at 1815 at the latest. I will be taking the flags at one end so all we need is one more guy to do the goal umpiring at other end. Contact me if you are up for it.

This is a good chance for us to get together as a team and watch some footy together as well.  So if you not busy come down and cheer on the Blues or Axeman or both!

See you guys at training!! Thursday 1800.

The Årsta huddle

Round One Match Report

Huge Win!!!

What a fantastic effort from both teams, both showing signs of a promising 2011.

The far more experienced Årsta took control of the game from the start, and as expected went on to take the game quite easily    145 -22.

The undermanned Swans under the joint coaching effort of 1st time coaches Damo and Pär showed that we are looking like being a genuine contender for the 2011 premiership. With solid performances from  our experienced players Boots, Rob, Thor, Josh and Mats, Falun were set a task that was just too high, as most of their guys were first time players. The talk of the town after the match was how promising the Falun team looked and that most were surprised at the massive score. All the swans guys were really impressed with the Diggers fighting hard to the last quarter.

The Årsta Swans would like to officially like to say congratulations to Cameron and the team, you are a team of guys who showed they have the spirit and the courage needed, and with a bit more experience will no doubt have success in the coming months. Keep at it! Take at look at the Gold Coast win over Port. Really inspiring.

The other encouraging signs for the Swans this year were Jonas and Axl both first gamers and showing incredible signs of their potential. Jonas even booted a goal!! Very rare for a player on debut. Also big Robert showing signs that he is a player maturing into a guy that soon will be taking best and fairest points.

Highest goal scorers were Boots 6, Mats 4 and Josh 3.

With the big percentage for us we are sitting in 1st place. Somewhere we would like to stay. Next weeks match against Bromma will be a huge test and a good chance too see where we are at in the SAFF this year. So lets all get to training on Thursday and give it our best shot on Saturday.

Get down to the ground at the latest 11 so we can prepare for the top of the table clash with Bromma.

Pre-season update

First official training on Wednesday was a good hit out with 10 Årsta Swans braving the 4 degree afternoon. Some good short and some good long drills helped our new lads get a feeling for Australian Football, while also showing that the old heads were lacking fitness after a long Swedish winter of too much nubbe and Swedish meatballs.

Upcoming training

Sunday 17th: Meet at 1pm at Liljeholmen T-Bana, between the T-Bana (metro) and the Tvärbana (tram).

Tuesday 19th: Our regular training on Wednesday will be moved to Tuesday next week, to accommodate the Special General Meeting of the SAFF, which is being held on Wednesday next week. See our usual ground for training and matches here.

Training has begun

Finally, the sun is shining and football is back on the agenda.

It’s hard to be concentrating on a pre-season while there’s 30cm of snow outside, but our first real spring day shone last Sunday and the Årsa Swans were there to take advantage of it.

We took a jog out to Vinterviken and then spent an hour with drills. No pics were taken, however, here’s a snap we found that represented the brilliant weather nicely.

From now on, training will be every Wednesday evening at 6pm at Årstafältet. See our Play Footy in Stockholm page for a map and directions on how to get there. As usual, contact the Årsta Swans if you’ve got any questions about the club or how you can get involved.
