Halfway through the season

The summerbreak is over and we are back to playing footy again.

The first half of the 2019 season showed a lot of promise. We have some new recruits and some returning known faces in the lineup.
Despite this we were only able to win one of the games so far, but the new players are starting to get the mileage they need and the oldies have cut down on the beer intake so hopefully the second half of the season will see us win a lot more games.

The first game of the second half will be played on tuesday august 13th, 18:00 at the oval in Skarpnäck.

During the summerbreak the 2019 Euro cup was held in Norrtälje, Sweden.
16 national teams played each other over a total of 68 matches during one sunny day in July. Årsta Swans was represented in the Swedish Elks by newcomer Samuel Fischerström. The Swedish Elks finnished the tournament in 5th place. Read more here

First goal of the last game landing Sweden in 5th place

Welcome down to the oval on tuesday!

UPDATE: The game will start at 19.20 at Skarpnäcks sportfält

First ball up of the season

The first game of the season is to be played in Norrtälje on April 27th at noon. As usual it will be a double header and the first teams to play are Norrtälje Dockers versus the Årsta Swans.

Will 2019 be the year the Swans will soar?
or will we add to our extensive collection of ecological kitchen utensils? 🙂

Welcome to the oval to cheer us on and enjoy the game.
There will be drinks and BBQ available as usual.

Welcome!!

SAFF finals and AFL finals

So the SAFF is at an end and the premiers are the Solna Axemen.
The finals took place on Saturday Sept 22 on a sunny, yet windy, Skarpnäcks sportfält.
Both teams were pumped for the task and Norrtälje Dockers hoping to win back to back premierships.
However when the siren sounded and the game was over Solna Axemen stood as victors and the end result were as follows:

Solna Axemen 10.7 (67)
Norrtälje Dockers 5.4 (34)

A big congratulations to Solna who can add another premiership to their long list of premiership wins.

Watch the SAFF grand final here

On the same day it was clear that the grand final teams of the AFL 2018 series will be Collingwood Magpies versus West Coast Eagles.
As always the SAFF will have a grand final breakfast. On Saturday September 29 we will watch the game while having an English breakfast at
The Auld Dub in Stockholm (Holländargatan 1). The festivities starts at 6 AM and entry will cost 50 SEK and breakfast is available for 129SEK

So come join us and have an awesome grand final celebration!!

Half the season done..

We have just returned from drnowmd.com vacation.
Half of the season is behind us.
Our playing as a team has become better and better, unfortunately that has not translated to the scoreboard.
We have lost the first five games of the season and we have 3 more before the semifinal (two scheduled and the season opener that we postponed)

We played Södermalm Blues on the weekend (Aug 25)
Årsta fired on all cylinders and took charge of the game giving us a nice lead at the end of the first quarter.
The following two quarters Södermalm fought back good, slowly gaining on us and the third quarter finnished with a one point difference between the teams.
The last quarter was a stand off
Who could muster a little bit more than the opponent?
Finally we managed to get a bit of a lead and when the final siren sounded the final score was

Årsta 14.12 (96)
Söder 12.10 (82)

We hope that this will give us the strength, selfesteem and will to fight to end the season with a few more wins.
We will go to Norrtälje to play the Dockers this coming saturday (Sept 1) – let’s hope we can put a dent i their successfull season

If you find yourself in Norrtälje on saturday, come down and cheer us on!

All for one, All for Årsta!!

“Cheer, cheer black, orange and white…”

Ok folks!

So it is that time of the year again.
Pre-season training has been going on for some time.
The grounds are drying up from the winter and we can have the training outdoors.
I finally get a burst of inspiration and sit down and add something to this page.

The 2018 season of Stockholm aussie rules football is here!!

So what is new, you might ask?
A whole lot, i´d say

Internally we have had some rotation among the roles in the team. The highlight would be Chris Murr stepping up as president of the team.
I bet he, together with coach Ché Ramiréz, will whip us into shape and turn Årsta Swans into the well oiled monster machine it can be.
We have a sponsor – Kaked Bygg who has provided us with new gear. In doing that we chose to tweak our color scheme a bit go for black and orange as our main colors.
We have had some new faces coming into the team. During pre-season a few of them has been proving themselves as quite promising – we are looking forward to see what they can bring to the table.

The first game of the season will be held at the Norrtälje Oval on april 28th at noon. It will be Årsta Swans v. Norrtälje dockers.
So please come and watch some footy, have a burger and drinks at the BBQ and cheer us on. Let 2018 be Årsta Swans year!!

You can download the 2018 fixture here. Print it out and slap it onto your fridgedoor 🙂

See you at the games!

One for all – all for Årsta!

Årsta Swans has got a sponsor!

Årsta Swans have got a sponsor!

We have been in contact with Bobby Miller over at Kaked Bygg and he has agreed to help us out with a new set of kits.

To show how excited we are about this, and to take another step to make Årsta Swans its own entity and not just a Sydney Swans clone, we have changed our colors slightly. Instead of having red and white as our most prominent colors we now have orange and black.

A big thanks to Bobby and the Kaked Bygg team!

For any non-aussies reading this:
Kit = player uniform 😉

Årsta Swans awards night 2017

It is November.
It is wet and just a few degrees outside.
The playing season is long gone and to add to the dread, we ended up last of the four teams in Stockholm.
What do you do to fight the gloom?
You have a bunch of laughs and drinks with good friends, or in other words – the annual Årsta Swans awards night!

We started with a very late AGM. Normaly they are held in the beginning of the season but due to various reasons that did not happen.
This meeting was more of a sum up of the past season and a bit of a prep for the coming one.
Information worth mentioning is that Wilhelm Fischerström stepped down as president after 2 years and handed the precidency over to Chris Murr.
The role as team treasurer, that has been vacant since Julian Huitfeldt moved to Australia, was filled by our newcomer Mark van Meeteren.

After the meeting our coach Ché Ramiréz took to the stand and started to hand out the awards for 2017.

We winner were as follows:
Goal kicker of the year: Glenn McLeod (Actually Glenn was the lead goalkicker in the whole competition)
Most improved player: Brian Weltz
Coaches award: Bill Chugg
The Hammer award: Wilhelm Fischerström
Club champion: Robert Young

After the award ceremony the group relocated to the Boomerang bar for even more drinks.

Here is a clip from the awards ceremony

The 2017 season is here!

It is that awesome time of the year again.

The snow is long gone (hopefully), the temperature is climbing, the oval is dry enough for games.

That means it is time to get things started – and that we will!!
The season premiere is here.

On Saturday, May 6th, the first double header will be played at Skarpnäcks sportfält.
The first game is us facing the Solna Axemen. Everyone is eager to get back on the field and wants to start with a win so it will be an interesting game.
The second game of the day will be a repeat of last years grand final; Norrtälje Dockers vs. Södermalm Blues. A guaranteed nail biter.

The first game will start at 12:00 and the second game will be started at about 13:30

This year we will have a grandstand to increase your viewing experience. There will be a naming ceremony for it – do not miss it =)

As usual there will be a BBQ with snags from Taylor & Jones, burgers, soda, beer and rosé

See you all on Saturday

Go Årsta!

Fixture for 2017

The fixture for 2017 has now been set and can be found here on the site.

A few things have changed this year, as you might have seen.
This year there are only four teams playing in the SAFF league; Årsta Swans, Norrtälje Dockers, Södermalm Blues and Solna Axemen.
The Bromma Vikings will be in hiatus during the 2017 season and their active players will play with the Solna Axemen.

We are also striving to play 12-a-side games as opposed to the 9-a-side game we have been playing. We are hoping that all teams will have the manpower to be able to fill a 12 + bench roster. More on this in the beginning of the season.

The SAFF has also been in contact with Stockholms Stad and the league has been promised a grandstand to be put next to the oval at Skarpnäcks sportfält. This is something we feel has been missing for a long time and we hope that this will enhance the spectators viewing experience.

The first games – a double header, will be played on May 6th.

Mark that day in your calendar and come down to the oval and kick off an awesome new season!

See you there!

One for all, All for Årsta!
